Tassal pioneered the salmon industry in Australia 35 years ago, with an ambition to produce healthy, fresh Atlantic salmon with a focus on quality and sustainable seafood for a growing population.
As responsible farmers, Tassal care about the welfare and quality of our fish, the environment on land and waterways in which we operate in, the local communities and our passionate people are building a better tomorrow while respecting our planet for future generations to come.
Atlantic salmon love the cool, beautiful, clean water in Tasmania where our farms are based.
As responsible farmers, we care about the health, welfare and quality of our thriving fish. Tassal have a dedicated health care team for our salmon that follows a health care management plan.
Our feed is specially formulated by nutritionists, third-party aquaculture certified and contains vitamins, minerals and no growth hormones. This feed provides enough energy for our salmon to thrive whilst also supplying all the essential nutrients for healthy growth.
Salmon get their signature pink flesh colour from their diet, whether wild or farmed. We don’t dye our salmon or use growth hormones. Wild salmon consume krill which contain a healthy antioxidant called astaxanthin. For our sustainably farmed salmon, we add this ingredient to our fish feed to mimic the diet of wild salmon. Just like we need Omega-3 in our diets, salmon need astaxanthin for their good health.
Tassals salmon pens are 33m long, contain 99% water and only 1% fish, making it one of the lowest density levels globally and leaving ample space for our fish to swim in.
Tassal take pride in ensuring our operations have minimal impact on the health of the ocean and waterways in our commitment to growing healthy and nutritious salmon sustainably.
The health of the seabed underneath our pens is important to us.
Tassal have extensive monitoring programs in place to track and measure the impact of salmon farming on the seabed. As part of our compliance programs, we undertake inspections of the seabed conditions, and our regulators review video footage provided by our world class feed centre in Hobart. Tominimise the excess fish feed and fish poo under our pens, Tassal has stringent seafloor monitoring. This is monitored in real time by a dedicated experienced team who review fish conditions, water quality and the seabed in accordance with regulatory bodies.
Keeping the Tasmanian waters clear and clean – allowing for sea creatures to move around freely!
Atlantic salmon is one of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids found in nature. Omega-3 plays an important role in promoting great overall health, however since our bodies cannot produce these fatty acids naturally we must look to source these from what we eat.
There are three types of Omega-3 – those from plant sources (known as ALA) and those from marine sources (called EPA and DHA). Marine Omega-3s are the most powerful and provide wide-ranging health benefits for our body and brain, such as maintaining a healthy heart and mind.
Just 100 grams of salmon provides 159% of the recommended daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids# and 42% of your daily protein requirement*. The Heart Foundation recommends that people should eat two to three serves of oily fish such as Tassal salmon per week as part of a healthy balanced diet.
